Thank you for your reply - yes, in hind sight, I see that Sarah Mills children were born 1842-1845, whereas the oldest child I have for Sarah Kelly is ca 1849.
Thank you for the name of the cemetary, I did not have that for Thomas & his second wife.
As for the spelling of the last name for these 3 children, what was your source for their names? If the people themselves don't do the writing, it becomes how the person thought he heard the last name, and writing it as he thought represented those sounds. So depending on the source, I am not sure there is so much significance in the spelling, in that era.
Certainly there were many Indian people in Coffee County in those days, from several tribes.I had heard a person who owned the property which had been in possession of Joel Helms and Lecy Thomas say that their family always said that Lecy was part Indian.I mention this because their son Charles Ingram Helms married Elizabeth Adkison/Adkinson, daughter of Britton T. Adkison - and it was said that in that day, mixed Indian blood often intermarried with mixed Indian blood - but no one claimed to be Indian because there was a social stigma against it in those days.Just unproven oral history, of course.
But I had not heard it said of the Adkison/Adkissons, even though in all photos I have seen of the earliest Adkissons, all have dark hair and dark eyes.
