This year I started doing some research on the Eagarsof CountyKerry Ireland and their transition into Agar, particularly the Ceylon Branch, so was really excited to find your chat roomI am particularly interested in Mary Agar who married Jocylen Thomas and wondered if this could be Maria Willington Shelton Agar younger Sister of Walter, Roper and Annie Susan Eliza( born 1875). I don’t have a date of birth for her Maria)but havea record oftwo other brothers Robert Charles born 1883 and Edward Lethbridge Shelton born 1888.
I understand that Walter James Agar (the name was changed from Eagar in 1874) started as a rubber planter and moved on to coffee before he became a tea planter. I have also come across reference to a Maskeliya estate and another plantation that he apparently ownedas well as Logie.
Gus Agar’s father was John Shelton Agar of Woodmount Kerry and Mount Temple Ceylon 3rd son of James Walter Agar and Susan Shelton. There is a memorial in the Church in Kandy to a John Shelton Agar who died as a result of Cholera in 1902
I am also trying to move back up the tree as I understood that the Eagars of Kerry were originally the Earls of Normingtonwho supported the wrong side during the War of the Roses and ended up fleeing to Ireland, however the earliest record I have is of Robert Eagar born 1598 in England he married a Miss Hamilton also born in England but appear to have married in Kerry around 1634.
