Herk, I have some questions about the Roman Loomis Agard Jrs. in Illinois.Illinois marriage index has these two: Remus Agard to Sarah Woods on 11/4/1860 in Grundy County R M Agard to Mrs. Sarah R. Lees on 5/15/1878 in Grundy Co. 1880 Census has a large family R M Agard HH (OH,CT,unknown) age 43 , wife Sarah Agard (NJ,NJ,NJ) age 29 , children Laura age 12, Willie age 10 , Daisy age 7, Irene age 4 . Next household has your people Jonas and Mary Slutter, aged 75 and 64 respectively.Mary having been the widow of Roman Loomis Sr is perhaps the mother of R M.
These are my questions:If indeed this R M is Roman Loomis, Jr. , and if indeed they married in 1878, then this Sarah cannot be the mother of the four kids.If the Remus Agard is also Roman Loomis Jr., then it appears that the simplest explanation is that he married two Sarahs, both from NJ, the first being the mother and now deceased.Do I have this right, or can you enlighten me as to the true facts? And more details if you have them.
You could email me directly at agard.math.umn.edu.I'll tell you more about myself and my interest in another note, but suffice it for now to say that my father FB Agard wrote the book "Agards in America".My father did not seem to know of Roman Loomis Jr., crediting Roman Sr. with only Benjamin and Frank. He also attributed the Jonas Slutter marriage to a Mary that he listed as daughter of Alvin, older brother to Roman Sr.Such a Mary may have very well never existed. He (my father) did make unwarranted assumptions from time to time, and this whole branch is clearly one of his weakest sections. It needs work big time, and I too am in correspondence with Shirley Wilcox, about other details.
