I am researching my great-great grandmother, Sarah Catherine Agee, (born 1842 TN-died ? Walnut Ridge, Lawrence Country, AR, or possibly Jackson Country, AR?) and would appreciate any information you have. What I have learned is below.
I found her name In researching my great grandfather, William David McLain, AR, (1859-1921, Newport, AR).Since then, I learned that W.D's father, John Henry McLain, TN(1837-1880) married a Sarah Catherine Agee, TN (1842- ?). I may have her photo and her husband John's photo in an old family photo passed along to me after a son of W.D.'s (Alvin C. McLain) died in McNeil, AR in 1998.
The only other information I have about Sarah Catherine Agee is as follows: Her children were: my great- grandfather William David, Ruth A. (1866- ?) Charles D. (1864-?) and John M. (B 09/29/1868-D 03/02/1905--photo of headstone in cemetery in Newport, AR).
William David was born in Walnut Ridge, Lawrence County, AR. His first wife, Cornelia died. In 1898, W.D. married my great-grandmother, Clara Cooper (b 1878, Brinkley, AR, d 1979 in McNeil, AR, buried in Little Rock, AR). Sometime after this marriage, while living in Newport, AR where they made their home and he later died, he placed in Newport's First Christian Church a large section of stained glass windows in memory of his mother, Sarah Catherine McLain--"In Memory of Mother" and her name are words that are part of a bottom section of the glass.
I visited Newport in the summer of 1998 and photographed the church windows and all the headstones I could find in the McLain area of the Walnut Grove Cemetery. I could find no headstone for Sarah Catherine McLain.
(Aside and possible area of research: Small world that it is, after living overseas for 20+ years, my husband and I have coincidentally retired to East Tennessee near Knoxville--the area that seems likely to have been home to Sarah Catherine Agee. This morning's Knoxville Sentinel newspaper had an article related to moving an old Victorian home located on the corner of Clinch Avenue and James Agee Street. Upon looking up history of James Agee, I found an author by that name--died 1955---"A Death in the Family" is one of his books. Possibly related to my gg grandmother, Sarah?) Thanks for any help.
