He came to America in hopes for a better life for his family in 1817. They sailed on the ship Lord Nelson out of Belfast. After a crossing of six weeks, they came within sight of land off Halifax, N.S. on June 22, 1817. On the following day, in dense fog, Capt. Law brought the ship upon the rocks where it foundered. However, the water was shallow enough that there was time to ferry all hands and passengers to land. See the account in "James Ager and his Descendents". They sailed on in another vessel to Perth Amboy, NJ, and then made their way inland to Chambersburg, PA, were they settled.
After his wife died, James took his son Robert and returned to Ireland to accomodate some persons who held a life lease on land from parties who, the Agers having moved away, were ready to declare the lease void. James was one of the three lives in question.
Upon his return to America, he and Robert decided to locate in Baltimore, to be near other Irish friends and neighbors.
His family recounted that James was tasty in dress and had good manners. He had shoes with silver buckles, and wore silk stockings. He sported a great coat and small clothes - with brass buttons. He could read and write and was tolerant of all religious beliefs. He was respected by both Protestants and Catholics. He wore his hair in a queue, tied with eel skin on weekdays, and with black ribbon on Sundays.

2.) Bible Record stating that James Edgar changed his surname to Ager. :
The Agers also rendered their name Edgar and even Eager. They are probably related to the Scotch-Irish family with the name of Edgar which lived in County Tyrone and Ulster. Four brothers from Scotland with this name located there during the reign of William III.
A family bible shows that our James Edgar apparently chnaged the spelling of his name to Ager; no one knows why. Marriage Proof of James Ager to Mary Jeffrey Forbes (dtr of John Forbes)
