Certyainly they were descended from Agnew of Lochnaw, but which one. Sir Andrew Agnew said that the American Agnew were all descended from Galdenoch Agnew, as distinguished from the Kilwaughter Agnew, but both ultimately from the Locknaw Agnew. However you say that "The most important evidence is that Captain James Agnew, Jr believed that he was the Great Grandson of Alexander." well I have the cd of"the Book of Agnew" open before me and I do not recall any quotes of that man and I am looking now. Can you tell me what page it is on?
The Book of Agnew . It all hangs on the Kett afidavit. That lady should have interviewed the Agnews around Moira. She didn't mention the Dromore Wills. She missed the Carrickfergus rentals. She puts together a circumstantial case.
I have looked closely at the Donegore Agnew and they and the Tasmanian Prime Minister are Galdenoch Agnew. The John Derra Par Finvoy is buried with his kin Ninian etc I think they all related. I have corresponded withe descendants of the Donegore group. Kett gets her Johns mixed up. I think the John Agnew she was looking for is in the Carrickfergus records for 1660 I think it was. Having inherited his likely father Alexander's leases.
Interesting that Miss Kett met Hon F.J. Bigger who my mother remembers as a child when he visited her father John Agnew. They had a bottle of Guinness on the braes and talked historyback in 1926 or so.
Why would James Agnew of Balloo wait till he was forty before having his son James b 1711, when he had long had the farm.OK so the Black Oath or whatever it was called in Ireland would have made them broke.
John of Ballymaglaff or Ballymaglave is not John Derra Par Finvoy.
Alexander Agnew of Ballymaglaff died in 1700, not 1722. So father John not neccessarily alive in 1722.The John Agnew in Ballymoney is a completely different bloke- the Donegore lot. As I remeber there are no Alexanders in the Donegore tree. Nor are there any Alexanders in the American Agnew under discussion.
The difficulty is not proving thatCol Alex was John Ballymaglaff father but that the American James has a connection.
So why did Miss Ketts not find the James Agnew buried in Dromore Cathedral about 1724 aged about 40 and his brother Andrew the same year. James children include names like Quentin, Alexander etc very Locknaw.
