Hi Alan, No, sorry, I do not have any more information about James. I did find his wife Jane and son George living together, just the two of them, in the 1890 Police Census for Manhattan at the 2099 Second Ave address. So I am sure James died sometime between 1880 and 1890. I haven't been back to NYC to do any research in the municipal archives, so I haven't been able to check for James' death. I think James and Jane arrived in NYC about 1864, when there was a passenger list with a "Tim" Ahern and wife Jane Ahern travelling together.
I was primarily interested in this family in an effort to determine a connection with my Irish Cummins/Cummings family. In the 1870 census, James and Jane Ahern were living at the same address as the family of a Thomas Cummings. When James & Jane moved to 347 E 114th st, I found that my own Auntie Bridget Cummings, her husband John Dorris and her unmarried younger brother Lawrence Cummings were living at the same address in 1886. Late in 1886, Lawrence moved back to Fall River MA, and Bridget and John moved to another address. But when Lauwrence came back to Manhattan the next year in 1887, he went back to the E 114th st address, where the Aherns were still living, but no other Cummings family. So... I can only wonder if there was a connection. Bridget and Lawrence had a sister Jane, but I have ruled her out as James Ahern's wife, which was my first thought.
This is probably more than you wanted to know... What is your Ahern connection? Sue
