Looking for information on where in Bavaria this John William Ahrens might have been born. Also looking for anyone else researching this family. John was my g.g.g. grandfather. John William Ahrens b. abt 1834 in Bavariam. Sophie (?) b. Germany (Bavaria?) abt. 1826, came to the US on the ship Donau**. The ship left Hamburg May 5, 1860 and arrived in NY on July 12, 1861, the master was Joachim Meyer.) With John and Sophie were John William (Jr) b. abt 1855 in Germany and Sophie b. abt 1860.
By 1870, John and his family had moved to Wellsville, Allegany County, NY. John (Sr) Sophie, John (Jr.) Other children still living at home were Frederick b. abt 1863-probably NY. Christian b. 1865 in NY and Ida b. 1866 in NY. There is no mention of the Sophie b. abt 1860, it is possible that she died young.
The 1870 census has John working in a tannery, Sophie keeps house, John works on farm, Fred, Christian and Ida were at home.
The 1880 census shows John, Sophie, Frederick, Christian & Ida. John(Sr) is still working in the tannery. Sophie still keeping house. Frederick is working in a machinery shop and Christian in a saw mill.
Next door is a Christ Ahrens also born in Bavaria abt 1846, his wife Mary, daughter Pauline, sons Frederick & William and daughter Anna. He was probably some relation but it is unknown what relation.
John (Sr) and Sophie are buried in Woodlawn cemetery with Fred ( It appears that Fred had two wives) and Theresa. John died in 1907 and Sophia died in 1894.
John(Jr) was my g.g. grandfather. In 1880, he and “Rosie”(Rosa Marguerite Howard) were in Genesee, Potter County, PA. John is listed as a laborer on the Teeter farm. Rosa is listed as a boarder.I don’t know their marriage date.I do know thatJohn d. in 1936 and Rosa in 1953. They are both buried in Yorks Corners Cemetery along with Walter and Nina(Dudley) Ahrens and Alta A(Ahrens) Wilson).
