My GGF came into the US in 1887. They misspelled his name to Aeillo (a-lo). He was too afraid to say anything, fearing they would send him back. SO he kept it as it was. I have heard it pronounced both ways. It does complicte trying to find your fore family like that though. Hi name was Frank Aiello. That is about as common as John Smith here in the US. A tough gig when that is about all you have to go on.
