In 1999 there was a flurry on this site about the Aikens, who I consider likely to be my wife's ancestors. My problem is little proof & alot of assumption.
My wife's (2x) Great Grandmother was Catherine Aiken, born in June 1822 in Chester, Rockingham County, NH. She married E.L.S. (Edward Louis Scott) Hammond, b. 1821 in Boston, Mass circa 1842. Per Catherine's Death Cert. she was born in Chester & her father was William Aikem & her mother was Hannah, maiden name not given.
In Chester there was a William Aiken, born 4/25/1795 to Samuel Aiken, jr. & Isabella McDole (McDoel). There was also a Hannah Linn, who was born around 1795 & likely in the Chester area. Her parents was reportedly Joseph Linn & Molly Gilchrist. William Aiken & Hannah Linn married in 1814 , Chester, NH. They had a daughter Hannah, who fits.
Although much follows logic, the only real evidence is Catherine's Death Cert. Chester Vital Clerk has no record of Catherine's birth & I can locate no other documentaion. Is there anyone out there who could be kind enough to provide assistance? Thank you
