I'm a descendant of the Franklin, New Hampshire Aikens whose inventions have recently been exhibited around the state. The claim that Jonas and Walter were related to Thomas "Spinning Wheel" Aiken has long been a suspect one. Herrick, the father of Walter and Jonas, was the son of Matthew Aiken, a saddle-maker who lived at various times in Deering, Peterborough, and finally Pelham, NH. No official birth record of Matthew exists, although from the town histories we are told that he was born in 1766 in Deering. As Thomas did not marry Mary Anderson until six years after this birth,Matthew would have had to have been Thomas's son by an earlier marriage, which we are unable to find evidence for. Matthew first appears as an apprentice to James Aiken, a tanner from New Boston (if I remember correctly) who does not appear to be in the direct line of Edward and Barbara of Londonderry. Has anyone yet discovered the parents or siblings of this Edward Aiken? James the tanner supposedly came to New Hampshire with his mother, the widow Ann Aiken, who as I remember it married a Riddle.
