Fascinating stuff.I found the word "stuff" in an old English book from hundreds of years ago to my surprise. so its age lends the word some respect.
I have never researched Alestock but did attempt to help a fellow surname meaning researcher.
Mestizo is Spanish for mixed.I'm assuming Metis is French for mixed.
The Moors were name after the people of Mauritania as I discovered on Jeopardy the other night, not Morocco as I had assumed. And yes, there were many Jewish families in Spain with many hundreds of Spanish surnames, perhaps even thousands. The expulsion of Jews in 1492 led many to suspect that Columbus was of Jewish blood because he left one or two days before the date of expulsion or converion took effect in 1492.But his Italian background is well known. However there were Jews aboard his ships, including a navigator, if memory serves.
Thanks for all the Shawnee information.Wish I knew where the Alestock/Cornstalk marriage to Isabel Ratliff came from. The notes are probably here but it would take years to find them.It did sound a little too early in history to be accurate.
