When I embarked upon my research into my Ainslie ancestors I thought it would be easy, as I have only met one unrelated Ainslie in my life. Little did I know! I have come to a full stop in Scots Origins and in the IGI and I am bogged down in 19th century Edinburgh.I have a copy of the Dolphinston Ainslie genealogy which is definitely not our branch, so I wonder how to get hold of a copy of the Ainslies of Lasswade - can you help here?
My problem is that my gg-grandfather (John Ainslie, married in 1835 to Christina Jeffrey) seems to have belonged to a non-conformist church, or been too poor to register the births of his children. It is also difficult to establish which of all the Johns born around the 1810s is him.
However, his son(my g-grandfather) was called James and I have just found another John, married Janet Cantley in Leith in 1861, who I think may have been James's brother. He had a son called George, which may be a connection to the George under discussion here - what do you think?
