Greetings to Hugh and other AINSLIE researchers. This is a very late addition to an old thread.
I have only last week finally discovered my AINSLIE connection in South Africa, this being Martha Victoria AINSLIE, gggrandmother, who married Edmund SHEPHERD, son of one of the 1820 Settlers to the Eastern Cape, Port Elizabeth area. I can only guess at Martha's birth year as probably being in the 1830s, as the marriage referred to above was in 1856. An inherited "birthday book" gives day and month for Martha's birth as 24 May. The family at the time was certainly still within a short radius of Port Elizabeth.
From other messages, I don't see any link to the AINSLIEs mentioned so far in South Africa, and it seems to me there were more than one AINSLIE family unit settling there in the 1800s, possibly unrelated, or maybe distantly related?
As other major lines up my family tree reach back to Berwick-upon-Tweed (HATTLE) and Edinburgh/Lasswade (GRAY), both of which are areas where AINSLIEs are found, I would be fascinated to find my AINSLIE line stretching back independently to a similar area.
Does anyone have data which would give me a lead on my Martha?
