Just in case anyone is interested, on December 31st I visited Kensal Green Cemetry to look for the grave of my ggg grandfather's brother General Sir John Aitchison, GCB and this is what I sent to several interested cousins....maybe there are more of you out there!!
I knew that our ancestor George Aitchison's brother General Sir John Aitchison, was buried in Kensal Green Cemetry, next to the Duke of Cambridge. It is a most grand mausoleum , and bigger than that of the Duke of Cambridge!! I did not have time to write the whole inscription down, but did take some notes...and will go back another time for the rest.
Above the mausoleum it says "Mausoluem of General Sir John Aitchison GCB"
The main inscription started "In the vault of the mausoleum repose the mortal remains of John Aitchisopn, GCB Born on 27th April 1789 Died on 12th May 1875.Entering the 3rd guards now styled Scots Guards at the age of 16 in 1805......" and went on with a long history of his illustious career.I will get the rest on another visit...
"Ellen Elizabeth Lady Aitchison widow of the above born 22nd July 1826 Died 30th March 1896 Florence Marian Fortescue Born 13th November 1858 Died 5th February 1871 Victoria Wilhelmina Camilla Lennox Born 9th November 1868 Died 25th February 1871".
These were his wife and 2 daughters...
Also "To the glory of God and in loving memory of Archibald John Thomas Francis Aitchison the beloved husband of Evelyn Aitchison and only son of General Sir John Aitchison GCB Born 11th November 1861 eneterd into rest 12th June 1908. With Christ which is far better"
On the way out I bought a booklet on celebrated people buried there and in it tells of Sir John Rennie (1794-1874) and Captain Charles Spencer Ricketts, who is one of the Jervis family....
Anyway, I thought that some of you might be interested! I did take some photos...which I have not downloaded yet but could make available to anyone interested.
Also, doing a bit of digging around I discovered that his son, Archibald John Thomas Francis Aitchison (1861-1908) was married (for the 2nd time) in 1903 to Evelyn Charlotte Ram with whom they had 2 children - Evelyn Mary Theodosia (1904-1943 - killed on HMS Safeguard in the Women's Royal Naval Service) and John Francis Aitchison (born 1906, in London - St. George's, Hanover Square about whom I know nothing). Evelyn Ram came from a most interesting family with connections to the Stopford family (Lady Jane Stopford and the Earls of Courtown); Duke of Buccleuch; Montagu; Scott (Earls of Home); Barons of Inchiquin (O'Brien) etc.
Any info on John Francis Aitchison, born in 1906 would be much appreciated!! I look forward to hearing from anyone interested... George Cooke
