Dear Pamela,
I think I must have a parallel family....Alexander Aitken born 1830 in Edinburgh had a brother called James - but born 1827 and a father called William in 1793/4. William was a Spirit Dealer in Leith. Lots of connections to Edinburgh and Innerleithen in Peebleshire - so perhaps cousins. This William Aitken married Elizabeth Williamson in 1816 in South Leith.
