Just now a kind person who did a lookup for me concerning Franklin Co Ill. sent me this:
Benton Evening News 03 April l944 "Mrs. Mary E Whitehurst 95, widow of Fredrick Whitehurst, died today in West City at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Akin. She was born 24 January l849. She also leaves a son, James Whitehurst, of near Akin. Burial at the cemtery adjacent to Mt Etna Church."
I believe Mary E Whitehurst was the widow of Fredrick Whitehurst, who was born l843 in Tennessee, likely Haywood County. Fredrick was the son of Ben B L Whitehurst and Mary Bryant Whitehurst. Ben was born in Pitt Co North Carolina, moved to Haywood County,Tn. in the l840's and later moved to Tishomingo Co Ms. to be near his brothers.Likely he died in Prentiss County, Mississippi, an adjoining county to Tishomingo Co.
I have searched for 20 years or so to find out what happened to Fredrick Whitehurst. I do know that with 6 of his brothers, he took the Union side in the Civil War.After that, he seemed to disappear off the face of the earth. It was not until last week when my local library got a copy of the CDS of the l880 National Census that I found Fredrick, at least I think it to be him. Now, I am trying to find out where his descendants are.I would like to compare genealogy with them.
In l880, Fredrick and Mary had:James F. ll, Minnie R., 8 and Eliza J., 5.
Would like to correspond with some of these Akin/Whitehursts.
