Robert- please forgive me if we have already corresponded and resolved whatever questions I might have had regarding the Akin family.I don't know if I explained what my interest in this family is and I think I should.
My 4th great grandparents were William ATWELL and Esther PEPPER, both b. abt 1790.Esther PEPPER was prob. born in Sherman, CT and was the dau. of Stephen PEPPER and Esther WANZER.William ATWELL and Esther PEPPER's only known son was named Akin ATWELL, b.1821. The family moved to Luzerne Co, PA by 1830 as did 2 of Stephen PEPPER's nephews.
In a genealogy on the WANZER family, I found the connection between the WANZER and AKIN family which I was posting about. But since that time I have learned a few things about the family.Firstly, Stephen PEPPER moved from Sherman, CT to Pawling, NY sometime between 1790 and 1800 and died there in 1832.Except for the 1810 census which lists him in Patterson, NY, he seems to have lived the rest of his life in Pawling though 3 of his children (Pauline PEPPER, wife of Joseph STEDWELL, Nehemiah PEPPER and Maria PEPPER, wife of Abraham BIRDSELL) settled in Patterson.
In the census records of Sherman, CT and Pawling, NY and Patterson, NY I always find AKIN, AKINS and AIKENS families living near Stephen PEPPER and his children.I am guessing there are more connections than the one I initially asked you about.
I am pursuing this for 2 reasons: one, because I have a hunch that my 3rd great grandfather Akin ATWELL was named after a paternal grandmother, meaning there should be an AKIN-ATWELL marriage in the 1770-1780 range somewhere between Sherman and Pawling; and two, because I cannot find William ATWELL, Esther PEPPER, or several of her siblings in the 1820 census so I am looking into all of the relatives of the family to try and figure out where they went to.The father, Stephen PEPPER, is living alone with his wife in Pawling in 1820 but half of their children are unaccounted for despite all of them being in their late 20s to early 30s and most of them married.
Do you have any more information on possible connections between the AKIN family and the ATWELL, PEPPER or WANZER families?
