George,
James would have been born about 1730-35, he came to Mecklenburg Co., N.C. from Cecil Co., Maryland, before 1777. He did have a son by the name of John Akins, born about 1760, who died in 1839 in Morgan Co., Georgia. This John was brother to my William Akins, Sr., born 1756 in Cecil Co., Maryland; died 1841 in Cherokee Co., Alabama. Other children of this family included Thomas, b. 1758 - d. 1785; Rachel, b. 1762; James, b. 1664, and Agnes, b. 1770 - d. 1779, possibly others, maybe a Samuel and a Peter, probably more daughters whose names are not known. There were several families of Akin/Akins/Aiken living in N.C. in the 1700's, not all are related. Some came from Virginia. Joseph and Isham Akin of Mecklenburg Co., Virginia, both settled in Granville Co., N.C. where they both died in 1808. I do not have a complete listing of their children, but I do know that there were a great many Akin marriage records in Granville Co., N.C. in the 1700's and 1800's, so this might be a place to look. The Virginia branch of the Akin family can be traced back to a James Akin who was granted 250 acres of land in Henrico Co., Virginia in 1665. This James Akin, who was born about 1635 and married a woman named Sarah, may have been the son of an "Jno. Aekin" who came to Warwick Co., Virginia in 1645, or a son of John Acken who came to Virginia in 1653. Maybe you can check into some of this. The Clan Akins Society has some information on this family in one of their newsletters. You can reach them at: http://www.angelfire.com/ar/clanakins/society.html
