I can't speak for all "Northern Akins" lines, but I haven't been able to get exact information about my immigrant ancestor. I know he was "of Scottish origin," and that he arrived in Boston in 1710 on a ship from Londonderry, Ireland, according to a history of the town in which he died. Near as we can tell, he would have been about 16 at the time, so we don't know if he stowed away, worked on the ship, came with family, or was sent by his family to find a new life. So far, records of ships arriving in Boston in 1710 have been very sparse, at best.
When did your family arrive in North America? Was it during the potato famine, or the English-imposed relocation of many Scots?
I suspect we have common ancestry, at least in Scotland, but there's no way to tell without more information on my side to compare to yours.
