I heard the same thing from my father as well as several other Akridges. I thought there were only 3 sons, but 5 may be the case. As I understand it, William came with Lafayette mostly to escape religious persecution. My father tells me that he was also a mercenary and came to help with the American war effort. I have also gathered other information from other Akridges who tell me that the Akridge's also left England to France due to religious persecution. I've been told that the family was in Somerset Co. England living under the name "Hawkridge". When they moved to France the h sound was dropped and it was prounced "awkridge" or "a kridge". I suppose when William G. came over to the Deep South it becamse the modern day Akridge. I am trying to look into all of this though.
