Sometime between 1953- 1956, two young girls around 13 and 16, ran away from home. The sisters, "Linda and Yolanda" left behind their mother, Liberdad(?) and several siblings - including Rosa, Sammy and Hector. They likely had others sisters and brothers but I do not know their names.
The father and mother separated when they were young and the father ended up at one point in San Antonio where possibly owned or managed a small hardware store or some kind of general store. The family was originally from Moneterrey however and would return there often when their was no agricultural work up north.
Alaniz is their father's last name, presumably. However, by the time I was in high school my aunt began to insist that their last name was Gutierrez and that Alaniz was their stepfather's last name. My mother on the other hand strongly disagreed and insisted their last name was Alaniz.
This might have been an issue with my aunt because at the time I was a teen and said how I intended to look for my missing family of aunts and uncles and cousins. My aunt was uncomfortable with the idea. very uncomfortable. My mother said she was ashamed because they had run away, and possibly because they had married black men...(it is what it is.)
Me, personally, ever since I was a child longed to find more information and the eventual whereabouts of anyone from their family. My mom and aunt are old now and live in New Jersey.
I imagine my grandmother is gone (the sisters actually had a very strange period in the 70s where they were plagued by a nightmare in which they both seemed to know that their mother had passed at the time. My mother and aunt said a few times my abuela was a curandera) and my tios y tias are also up in years...so I am hoping there are cousins who might recall vague stories about aunts that ran away from home as kids.
I am so desperate to find even just one cousin or family member. Please, any help anyone can offer would be so greatly appreciated. I know the back ground info is brief but my mother and aunt never really liked to talk about the years before the ran away. What I learned came from being a pain in the butt anyway and constantly asking to hear more or the same stories over and over again.
When they ran away they were - I believe - in Hagerstown, Maryland. The two young girls told their mother they were going to the bathroom (an outhouse) but had actually made plans to run away. Well, that's about all I have to go on.
I hope someone can help. con todo mi corazón - mil gracias.
