A large Alberty family was spread around the Smyrna region of Greece and various parts of Italy. Unfortunately in 1922 Muslim Turks decided to slaughter all Greek Orthodox Christians who lived in Smyrna. The Turks wanted to destroy the Greek Christian culture. Turks burned all records which were kept in Churchs. It is very difficult to track the large number of Albertys which lived in Smyrna. I know that Albertys were burned alive by turks, and executed at point blank range by turks. I had one Alberty tell me in a village outside Athens Greece 20 years ago, how she survived by clinging to her mother in the ocean while they tried to swim to ships at sea. She told me her brother and sister age 6 and 8 disapeared under the surface of the ocean after being shot in the back by a turk on the beach. I know this story is authentic because I heard the exact same story from a Alberty decendant in America. By the way American and English war ships were watching the slaughter and did nothing to help. These people clearly told me that U.S. and English ships refused to take survivors aboard. A handful of Albertys that survived were picked up by a Japanese ship. Some of this group of Albertys relocated to other parts of Greece, France, Italy and America. Recently I visited a Greek Orthodox Monastery in America, in which a monk told me that he knows of another Alberty whos family was also slaughtered in Smyrna Greece in 1922.
