Thanks, I hadn't come across that one yet. They must have gone to England for a visit, because Mary, Edith and Bertha are on the electoral rolls living together in Redfern, Sydney, in 1930, 1933 and 1936. There's nothing available prior to that.
Since William Snr (our original mystery man) is not listed as a passenger, it looks as though it was definitely him who died in 1918.
The children's births were registered in 1903 (Wm), 1905 (Edith) and 1908 (Bertha), so making allowances for the unknown times of the year they were born, it all fits beautifully. Also, in the electoral rolls, Edith is listed as a fancy box maker, and there was a large box factory down the road from where they lived. My mother actually worked there for about 3 years as a teenager, but that would have been later because Wm (Snr) was her grandfather.
BTW, you asked how many Albistons there might have been in Sydney. There are only 2 fathers in the birth registers between 1788 and 1909 - Wm (our guy) and Thomas E, who was married to Emma - and nine deaths between 1788 and 1979.This should be 12 because my ggrandmother's children to Wm were raised to believe their surname was Radford (her second husband's name). There's a whole gaggle of people out there in Sydney and beyond who have always believed they're Radfords, but some are only just finding out they are, in fact, Albistons. (1788 is when the first colony was set up in Sydney and the other dates are the limits of permissable searches)
Your help has been invaluable and I really appreciate it.I just couldn't get anywhere at this end until your information on the William that you couldn't track. I stand in awe of the internet and the fact that we can help each other wherever we are in the world. As a pre-technology child, I think about how this exchange of knowledge would have been very near to impossible when I was young and it blows my mind.
Once again, thanks for this very valuable snippet of information. I'll let you know what's in that certificate when it arrives, but it looks as though it will just be confirmation of what we now know.
Take care, Lyn
PS I guess this means we must be related in some way - however distant!
