Okay – I’ll back up a generation or two to give you (and anyone else coming to this forum) some background information on my interest in the ALBRIGHT family:
Armanda/1 McKenney (my g-grandfather’s sister) m. in 1854 to George Smith Mary Ellen/2 Smith m. in 1881 to James Leach Dona Alice/3 Leach m1 Lon McCaleb and m2 Ralph Havenstrite Verbla/4 [unknown McCaleb or Havenstrite] m. Mr. ALBRIGHT
According to the obit of Dona Alice (Leach)(McCaleb) Havenstrite who died in Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California in 1975 she had living family: daughter, Verbla ALBRIGHT; son, Lon McCaleb, jr.; grandson, Chuck Nance; granddaughter, Nancy Olsen.
And why would I be interested in this family??? According to family tradition, Verbla’s grandmother, Mary Ellen (Smith) Leach, had written a McKenney family history. Mary Ellen would have been in a good position to know facts – having gotten information from both her mother (the first born in her McKenney family) and from her maternal grandparents whom she would have known personally. Those facts, of course, are lost in subsequent generations!
Also according to family tradition, Verbla’s mother, Dona Alice (Leach)(McCaleb) Havenstrite, took Mary Ellen’s family history when Mary died in 1946. So where is that family history now? I’ve checked the genealogy library in Santa Rosa where Dona lived for at least 30 years and where she died and there is nothing there on the family. I suspect that when Dona Alice died in 1975 that the papers either went to her daughter, Verbla ALBRIGHT or to her son, Lon McCaleb. Lon was (probably) unmarried and a seaman who died in San Francisco in 1999. If he was the one who “cleaned out the house” after the death of his mother, he probably threw the family history papers out. But if Verbla took them, they are probably (hopefully!!) still in the family somewhere.
Since Dona Alice was b. in 1885 she probably married first about 1905 and so her “children” were probably born 1906 – 1920. Verbla, if still living now, would be at least 80 yo. The two grandchildren mentioned, Nancy Olsen and Chuck Nance, would most likely be in their 60’s. This family did live in Alameda, Alameda County, California in 1975 when Dona Alice died. But I’ve not been able to find any of them since. Contemporary records are so difficult to search. Maybe I should hire a private detective !
I’ll post the ALBRIGHT families found in city directories and phone books as a separate posting here.
