On 29 March 1810, Mary Jane Aubry [2 June 1792 - 22 November 1865] married Matthew S.
Perry [18 December 1788 - 25 June 1853] in Lansingburgh, NY, a village near the city of Troy,
This marriage was announced in the 3 April 1810 issue of the Lansingburgh Gazette (p. 2, col. 3):
"Married, On Thursday evening last [i.e. 29 March 1810], by the Rev. Dr. Blatchford, Mr.
MATTHEW S. PERRY, to Miss MARY JANE AUBRY, both of this village." [According to Mrs.
Frances D. Broderick, the Lansingburgh Historian, the Rev. Dr. Blatchford was (at some later
point in his life) the first Principal of the school that has since become Rensselaer Polytechnic
Mary Jane [Aubry] Perry's name appears on the federal census of 1850: (reel 584, dwelling 667,
family 1059), [105 Fifth Street] 21 Aug 1850, second ward, City of Troy Rensselaer Co., NY:
"Jane Perry, female, aged, 60; Place of Birth, R.I.,"
Mary Jane [Aubry] Perry and Matthew S. Perry were the parents of eight children (all but one,
John, were born in Troy, New York):
Matthew Darius Perry [12 November 1812 - 19 April 1854]
Frances Eliza Perry [b. ca. 1813]
Mary Ann Perry [b. ca. 1814]
Sarah M. Perry [b. ca. 1815]
John Perry [ca. 1822 - ca. 1895]
Oliver Hazard Perry [ca. 1825 - 16 July 1885]
Louisa H. Perry [December 1827 - 12 June 1869]
George H. Perry [1831 - 13 November 1885]
This couple's second son, John Perry, the only one of their eight children not born in New York,
was born in Vermont. This suggests a family connection for Mary Jane [Aubry] Perry in Vermont in
At Mary Jane [Aubry] Perry's death, two obituary notices appear in Troy (NY) newspapers:
Troy Daily Whig (23 Nov 1865, p.3, col.3): "Mary Jane Perry was buried from St. John's
Episcopal Church in South Troy."
Troy Times (23 November 1865, p.3, col. 5): "Died, At Saratoga Springs, Nov 22nd, MARY
JANE PERRY, relict of Matthew S. Perry, aged 75 years. Funeral to-morrow, at 1 P.M., from the
residence of her son-in-law, E. L. Weatherhead [the husband of her daughter, Lousia H. (Perry)
Weatherhead, Saratoga Spa."
The details of her death are recorded in the "Record of Deaths, Burials, &c. in the City of Troy":
Date of Death: November 22, 1865.
Name: Mary J. Perry.
Where Died: Saratoga.
Primary Disease: Congestion Lungs.
Informant: G. H. Perry (her youngest son).
Place of Birth: New York City.
Parent's Name: blank.
Age: 73 years, 6 months.
Place of Interment: Mt. Id [Cemetery].
Although the above record of death states that Mary Jane [Aubry] Perry was born in New York
City (the informant was her son, George H. Perry), the 1850 Federal Census lists her birthplace as
Rhode Island [presumably she--or her husband--would have been the informant for the census
taker, and that information might be more accurate].
According to the work, "Inscriptions of Graves from Mt. Ida Cemetery, Pauling Ave., Troy, NY,"
by Mrs. Leland Wadsworth (published by the Philip Schyler Chapter, DAR, 1923, p.65), Mary
Jane [Aubry] Perry's gravestone in Mount Ida Cemetery is inscribed:
"Mary Jane, wife of Matthew S. Perry, died November 22, 1865, aged 73 years, 6 months, 19
Can anyone tell me anything about Mary Jane AUBRY's ancestry?
Do the names of her children appear familiar to anyone?
Are there any Aubry (or Aubury, or Awberry, or Awbury) families living in or near the Troy NY
area with a daughter named Mary Jane in 1810? In Vermont in 1822? In Rhode Island (or maybe
New York City) in 1792?
I would be very grateful for any help or suggestions concerning how to discover her parentage.
Mary Jane Aubry is my great grandfather's grandmother and has been on my list of "Grandmother
Dead Ends" for longer than I can remember.
