I was recently asked why I thought CPT David Mizell was not married to Sarah Albritton. This is my response:
This does get very complicated and some people do disagree with me on this, but here is one thing that I'm positive about:
Sarah Albritton, daughter of Richard Albritton and Mary Hart, married David Mizell b.1784, GA (possible son of David Mizell and Sarah Carter). This is not the CPT David Mizell!.This David Mizell is in the 1820, 1830, 1840 and 1850 censuses of Washington Parish, LA.His children mentioned in the will of Richard Albritton are also in that area.I descend from his son John D. Mizell b.1812, West Florida.
Now about the other David Mizell b.1770 (possible son of Charlton Mizell and Elizabeth Everett). The first record I have on him is the 1809 census of Camden Co, GA. Then he is in the 1820 census of Camden Co, GA; 1830 Alachua Co, FL; 1840 Columbia Co, FL and 1850 Alachua Co, FL. Their family tradition is that he married Sarah Albritton.I think she is supposed to be the daughter of Richard's brother John.I have seen nothing to support this. One person wrote me that he had seen something in a church record in Laurens Co, GA.I have not yet seen this record.
Even if CPT David Mizell b.1770 did marry Sarah Albritton, daughter of John; I don't think the record in Bulloch Co, GA refers to this marriage. This David Mizell was in southern GA in Camden Co, GA.Those saying he married in Bulloch Co, GA say that he went back to Bulloch Co, GA to marry Sarah Albritton.Another question on this issue is where was the John Albritton family in 1808.If they were not in Bulloch Co, GA then it would be safe to say this is not the record of their marriage.
I think one of the early researchers ofCPT David Mizell of FL saw the marriage record in Bulloch Co, GA and assumed it was their David Mizell. Then it got established as fact by being repeated.
David Mizell b.1784 was already in Bulloch Co, GA as was Richard Albritton.Looking in Washington Parish, LA and St. Helena Parish, LA around 1820 you'll see many of these families moved from Bulloch Co, GA....Mizell, Richardson, Albritton. The natural conclusion is that the marriage record in Bulloch Co, GA is refering to the David Mizell in Washington Parish NOT the one that was in Camden Co, GA.
This also raises another possibility on the CPT David Mizell of FL.There is an assumption that he was married 2 times. The second marriage to Sarah Albritton in 1808. It is possible that their marriage was earlier and that all the children were her children. That is IF his wife's name was Sarah Albritton. Some evidence of this needs to be found.Does anyone know her birth and death dates?
