My mother's father was Joseph John Allchin (b Rainham Kent1900 d 1981). His father was Joseph James Allchin (b Rainham Kent 1869-1951). His father was Edmund Allchin (d Maidstone 1916 aged 81). m 1862 Jane Button in London. The problem is that Jane and their 4 children appear on Census returns in Rainham - but I have not found Edmund, so I do not know where he was born. On all the documents traced relating to Edmund (marriage, children's birth and death he is described as a Groom(domestic) or coachman. I think his employment demanded he live with or near his employers. The only clue I have to his father is on the marrige certificate where he is named as Thomas Allchin - Occupation gamekeeper. The Malling connection is that there is a Thomas Allchin of East Malling in the 1881 census age 73. Occupation Gardener. The right age to to have a son by then 46 and a suitable occupation for a former Gamkeeper. Another connection is that in the 1861 census Jane Button's mother Mary is listed as being born in East Malling, so there is a connection between the Button family and the Malling area, and could explain how Edmund and Mary met. In the 19C Rainham was probably a good half day's journey from Malling. I would be grateful for information that would confirm the link between Thomas Allchin Gamekeeper on the marriage certificate and the Thomas from East Malling. Thomas Allchin b c 1808 East Malling. Edmund Allchin b c1835 Kent?
