It appears that the Revolutionary War brothers, Captains Daniel and John changed their names from Alcock to Alcox and Allcox as did one other brother, James.Capt. John’s gravestone definitely has it as Alcox.
It has long been a family story that Amos Bronson changed it to Alcott, not liking the cock or cox connotation and other families followed suit. Here are the spellings we have:
