To All Concerned, My name is Charles Alden. I am new to the field of genealogy and was searching my family tree when I discovered something odd. I had been told my entire life that we were direct descendants of John Alden. Going backwards from me (1964-NJ), it follows to father (Charles E. Alden-1940-NJ), grandfather (Ellsworth A. Alden-1909-NJ), G-grandfather (Augustus P. Alden-1880-NJ) and GG-grandfather (Augustus C. Alden-1854-CT). Due to conflicting biographies on the internet, it seems my GG-grandfather may, in fact, have been a Native American named Augustus Clark (Father: Samuel Calrk-1824-RI) that was adopted (kidnapped acording to the story but unreliable) along with his mother by a William Alden-1834-NY. I know this must seem confusing and elementary to the expert researchers on this site, but this has me perplexed. Is there anyway that I can truly confirm these facts without visiting the actual civic documents? Internet searches are nice but are often insufficient and I usually have more questions than when I began. I am in the military (US Army) and cannot easily access or visit these sites due to mission requirements and my curiousity begs me to find out before I retire (in 3 years) and could visit these repositories. If anyone has any information or insights, even a smidgen, that could shed some light on my question, it would be greatly appreciated. Hoping to hear from someone soon. And to all, Thanks, in advance.
