My ancestor known on various documents (regarding his sons Thomas and James) as Austin/Houston/ Hosken Alterator came from Chile in 1840 to Australia to work as a muleteer for the Australian Agricultural Company. He was probably from in or around Valparaiso. The name ALTERATOR(written by an Australian scribe) represents a good misspelling of ALDERETE. Is there anyone with access to Chilean records missing an Alderete boy possible named Agustin, probably born between 1820 and 1825? Other muleteers who accompanied him to Australia were Bernardo Riba and Santo Crina (spelt Creanor on Australian records). It's a long shot, but we are at a dead end here in Australia.
