Arthur A. Alderfer of Telford died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, in the skilled nursing facility of the Lutheran Community at Telford. He was 94.
He was the husband of Mary (Shelly) Alderfer. The couple celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary in September of this year.
Born in Lower Salford Township, he was the only son of the late Elmer N. and Annie (Alderfer) Alderfer.
A graduate of Souderton High School, Mr. Alderfer went on to graduate from Lansdale school of Business in 1929 and the Insurance Institute of Pennsylvania.
He started with Harleysville Mutual Casualty Co. as an office boy and policy writer. He was promoted to underwriter, chief underwriter, assistant secretary and secretary.
In February of 1955, he was elected president of the Harleysville Mutual Casualty Co. and Harleysville Insurance Co. In 1962, Mr. Alderfer was then elected chairman of the board of directors and chief executive officer. He retired in 1969, after a successful 40-year career.
Mr. Alderfer was a member of St. Michael's Lutheran Church, Sellersville since 1934. At the church he was a former Sunday school superintendent and member of church council. He served two terms on the executive committee of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod, and one term as chairman of the finance committee.
He was also very active in the community. Over the years, he had been; president of the board of directors of Grand View Hospital; chairman of Boy Scout troop committee and Cub master; member of the advisory board, Valley Forge Council, Boy Scouts of America; chairman, Franconia Township School Authority; member advisory board, Philadelphia National Bank in Lansdale; active in State and National Trade Association for Mutual Insurance companies; past president, Conference of Mutual Casualty companies; board of directors, Insurance Federation of Pennsylvania; trustee of Montgomery County Community College; past president of Toastmasters Club of North Penn; member Historical Society of Montgomery County; Souderton-Telford Rotary Club; charter member of the Indian Valley Country Club. He was also listed in the World Who's Who In Commerce and Industry, 1968 to 1969.
Along with his wife, Mr. Alderfer is survived by three sons: Donald Alderfer and his wife, Claire, of Huntingdon Valley; Dennis Alderfer and his wife, Julie, of Chesterbrook, and David Alderfer of Irvine, Calif.; and a daughter, Kathleen McDaniel and her husband, Robert, of Telford. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two dearly loved grandchildren.
Friends are invited to attend his memorial service to be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, at St. Michael's Lutheran Church, 25 E. Church St., Sellersville, PA 18960. Family will receive friends after the service. Interment was held privately at Sellersville Cemetery.
