Hello Cousin William:
This is Deborah Shelton Wood. I descend via Jacob and Rosie's son John who m. Hannah SUTPHIN; then Catherine who married Joshua REYNOLDS; their son Asa REYNOLDS 1845 and 2nd wife Polly BRADNER.
I had not read these msgs for a few months. I am so pleased to see all our ALDERMAN cousins.I read a couple of questions concerning my original notes. I have these sources somewhere in print but no longer on my PC files. I can only say that Jacob's arrival in Philadelphia was sited on two immigrant websites. I will be glad to post these sources and the author of the publication "Blue Ridge History" when I come across them again.
William, I believe that it is likely that Jacob was Jewish. Not just because he was German but I have information that seems to show that Jacob was not of the Moravian religion. While living inthe Moravian settlement of Bethabara in NC, Jacob and Rosanna lost a child in 1797. This son was five days old.
He is buried in lot no.47 in Dobbs Parish graveyard, made for the non-Moravian settlers. This cemetary which was built in 1759 and is located south of Bethabara Mill was commonly refered to as the "strangers graveyard".
It was common for Jewish immigrants of those days to "adopt" to other forms of religion depending upon the area in which they lived in America.
I would be interested to know what you may find regarding this.I remember that one gravestone where my Reynolds line is buried has a "Star of David" engraving.
I look forwqard to hearing from you.
Debbie
