I have a question about Jeremiah ALDERSON's wife, Rachel. I've seen quite a few instances where she is listed as Rachel COLE, or Rachel Susan COLE, and I'm wondering about the source of this information.
In Richmond County, Virginia Deed Book 12 on page 466 I found where James ALDERSON deeded a gift to his brother, Jeremiah (of whom James had been named guardian after the death of their father, John) a negro girl, age 2, named Lidda.
On 28 December 1784, Jeremiah ALDERSON sold several slaves to a Joseph SMITH, including Lidda. This bill of sale was witnessed by Tommy and Peggy BIGGARS. On that same day Joseph SMITH wrote his will.
From: "Genealogical Notes from Supreme Court Reports"; Compiled by William Ronald Cocke, Jr.; Columbia Virginia:
Hening & Munford Vol. 1, page 54, 1806:
Biggars' Administrator vs. Alderson
Joseph SMITH, dec'd. Will dated 28 December 1784, recorded in Lunenburg County in January 1785, though apparently lived until 1795. Tommy BIGGARS (defendant) and Peggy his wife attested to will. The deceased had a sister, Rachael, who was wife of ALDERSON, and had issue.
In this long and convoluted court case in which BIGGARS and ALDERSON sued each other back and forth, the bill of sale from Jeremiah ALDERSON to Joseph SMITH was entered into evidence. From this I gather that Jeremiah ALDERSON's wife Rachel was the sister of Joseph SMITH.
Where did the COLE surname come from, does anyone know?
