N. L. and I. C. Dickerson are Nelson Lumpkin Dickerson who was killed at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863 and Israel C. Dickerson who died in a Richmond, VA hospital on May 31, 1862. These Dickerson brothers served in CSA 2nd GA Infantry, Co. F with a William P. Wheeler, who I believe to be William Patterson Wheeler, their brother-in-law. According to "Henderson's Rosters" William P. Wheeler was "severely wounded...Wilderness, VA May 6, 1864"
On Feb. 20, 1999 while researching the family geneologyat the Marietta Library , my friend (who is also a descendent from Cherokee Co., Tracey Fowler Bean) came across a book entitled "Cemeteries of Cherokee Co." The book lists 3 Wheeler Family Cemeteries. The Avery Rd. Cemetery contained my direct gg and ggg grandparents.
We located the cemeteries by randomly knocking on the doors of residences and asking for information. On Avery Rd. I picked the oldest house I could find and knocked. Billy and Winnona McCurry lived there. Mr. McCurry was most helpful. He pointed across the street and said it was behind a clump of trees. It was getting dark so we didn't visit, but made plans to return the next day.
On Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, armed with camera, charcoal and tissue paper, I returned to Avery Rd - Tamie Clark-Tanner, Paul D.(Wheeler) Clark and, Tracey Fowler-Bean stepped onto Wheeler land at last. The moment was tender and special as we located each of our ancestor's memorials. My dad and I both cried as we lovingly touched the tombstones and photographed the site. # Note: Mr. McCurry informed me that the land is currently owned by a Mr. Clark Lindsey. It is 6 acres with no home on it at this time.
