I think that there is confusion over some different Josephs. Please, if you have some tangible proof that I am incorrect, please post as I think we need to figure this out. I do agree that my Robert C. is most likely there next to Joseph in the 1800 Burke County , N. C. census. I do not think that we connect to John McKnitt as his son was well documented to be Joseph McKnitt - not Joseph Lowery. However, I have seen the earliest land records in Cumberland Co., and they certainly are the children of James. I am sure that this Thomas may somehow connect to this line also. Does anyone know how? As to the Joseph that was born in County Tyrone in 1755 anddied in the 1830's in Washington, Co. Pa. Well, I spent a whole day on a research trip tracing him. If you can use Heritage Quest, you will see that his Revolutionary War pension application is on line. At thetime of his death he was married to his second wife Sarah Woodburn. In tracing this line, this Joseph was earlier married to a Frances, not Margaret Tate. I did a lot of work on him, which I should not have. If you look at the 1810 and 1820 census of Burke County, North Carolina - there is our Joseph. Next look at these same census records in Washington Co., Pa. The other Joseph is there. You can't say that he showed on both census records- as the household residents do not match. The Joseph in Washington Co., also clearly states in the pension that he lived in Washington Co., Pa. ever since the state linewas settled. There is one other Joseph that was born in County Tyrone in 1756 -he died in Indiana. This military pension record alsodoes not seem to match ours. Looking at Joseph Lowery's son John Piper's census in 1880, he said his father was born Pa. and his mom in Ireland. Please, see Will Book D in Cumberland County, Pa. There is a will there for a Thomas Alexander dated the 28th of Sept. 1778 and filed in Nov., 1785. In this will you will see that Thomas names his wife Mary, sons David, William, Joseph and daughter's Amey, Margaret, and Elizabeth. Which line does this Thomas connect to? Also, who is the Thomas listed in the 1851 Franklin Co. tax list.
Since I am questioning the Burke County book on the Joseph - There is a Samuel Tate listed in the 1759 Rowan Co., N. C. list. this may not be our Samuel - but are we sure?
