Wm. Black Billy Alexander was my 4Ggreatgrandfather who m. Margaret Clark and had 4 sons.One of the sons is my 3G greatgrandfather, Daniel Alexander, who m. his first cousin Susannah Shelby.Wm. BB Alexander's parents were my 5Ggreatgrands Benjamin and Susannah (Polk) alexander; he b. Cecil Co., MD; she b. Cumberland Co. (once Chester Co.), PA and both died in Mecklenburg Co., NC.Their dau., Susannah Polk Alexander, married Dr. Evan Shelby, Pvt., and they had 6 girls and 4 boys.Dau. Susannah Shelby is my 3Ggreatgrandmother.She married my 3Ggreatgrandfather Daniel Alexander, who was son of Wm. BB Alexander and gson of Benjamin and Susannah (Polk) Alexander.i.e., Ben and Susannah's granddau., Susannah Shelby, married their grand son, Daniel Alexander.
Wm. BB Alexander at age 18 led 9 boys on a raid of Col Moses Alexander's wagons of gunpowder, and other war goods, enroute to the British at Alamance, NC, and destroyed the goods.They were called after that "the black boys of Cabarrus Co.", with affection.His sword hung in the library hall at Davidson College in Mecklenburg where his son, Daniel, had a boarding house on campus mostly for the students.One of his daus., Margaret Annabelle Alexander, married Dr. Mortimer Delville Johnston, a math instructor at Davidson.The founder was Gen. Wm. Lee Davidson, whose sword hung in library hall, too.Both were lost when the hall burned per Davidson College, but they saved the library since it moved to another section before the fire. Wm. Lee and Daniel grew morus multicaulus for silk worms near campus for a few years while it was worthwhile.
