Dear Judy:I answered your query but never heard from you. I have a bunch of these ancestors/descendants.One of the descendants was Caroline "Carrie" Isabel Poole who m. John Rawls in Hickory Withe, Fayette co., TN.Caroline and some of her family migrated to Tupelo, Lee Co., MS, where she began a DAR chapter. She was active in it for years, and died 1934 (b. 1880).She wrote about the days in Hickory Withe and other family members in a very nostalgic way for the book:"Lineage and Tradition of the Family of John Springs III," by Maude Craig Mathews. She wrote about the Alexanders and Shelbys. It was Wm. and Mary (Shelby) Alexander who migrated from Mecklenburg Co., NC, to Hickory Withe. He was the son of Col. Elias & Agnes Nancy (McCall) Alexander of MD, who migrated to near Mecklenburg; Mary is one of 6 daughters of Evan & Susannah Polk (Alexander) Shelby, MD, pvt., ancestors of Sen. Richard Shelby of AL. Susannah Polk Alexander was my great aunt, d/o Benjamin and Susannah (Polk) Alexander.Susannah Polk was great aunt of pres. James Knox Polk; her bro. Ezekiel, was his grandfather, and her parents, Wm. and Margaret (Taylor) Polk II, were J.K.Polk's 1Ggreatgrands.They are my 6G greatgrands. And, they are all your kin as well.I am a direct descendant from Benjamin and Susan(nah) (Polk) Alexander of Charlotte:> William 'Black Billy" > Daniel > Marcus Sherman > Baron DeKalb > Albert Campbell Sr.> Albert Campbell Jr.> me.
Of course, I have a lot of Hickory Withe family as well. One of the Wilson's still has a (general merch.) store in the Hickory Withe area.
Martha Eliza Caldwell Alexander m. Wm. M. Wilson, whose father was the Sheriff of Mecklenburg Co., NC, at one time.Their Wilson children were James Franklin, Wm. TAylor, John McKemie/McCamy, Martha Louisa, and Mary Ann. John McKemie Wilson m. Catherine Josephine Zellner in 1861 and they had 10 children. One of best known (the bus. he started is still in the family today) was Samuel Young Wilson, Sr., who m. Emma Elizabeth Ann Gragg in Arlington, TN. (he had worded for Armistead & Co., etc., and in 1893 he opened his own business in Arlington, TN.Today, his granddau. Susan Wilson and her husband Mark Hogard, who have expanded the merchandise (info was valid in 2003).
Martha Eliza Caldwell Alexander's sister, Mary Isabella Alexander, m. Capt. Henry Munger Pitman, MD, in Hickory Withe, and they were the hub for the relatives in the area most of the time.Their dau., Lillian "Lillie" Cornelia Pitman m. Christopher Columbus Poole, and they were the parents of Caroline "Carrie" (Poole) Rawls.Lillian went with Caroline when she migrated to Tupelo, Lee Co., MS. Her mother helped her a lot with the article in the book re John Springs III.Mr. Poole died and she remarried Rev. John Daniel Hunter..I have several descendants of theirs in MS as well.Their 4 children were: John Pitman Alexander Hunter m. Alice Jeanette Adams. Douglas Shelby Hunter. Herbert Ligon Hunter. Cornelius Ormand Hunter. The descendants are from Alice above.
