Merritt Chesnut Alexander was born in Russell, AL ca. 1860. He later lived in NYC and is the brother of Elizabeth Lane Alexander who was my great great grandfather's second wife. My great great grandfather, Alexander S. Merritt, was born in NC in 1831 and lived in Marianna, FL. When Alexander S. Merritt died in 1906 his wife Elizabeth Lane Alexander Merritt moved to CA, perhaps near Los Angeles.
Elizabeth and Alexander had several children including Alexander Lane Merritt b. 1883 who moved to NYC. I suspect that he may have gone to NY to work with his uncle Merritt Chesnut Alexander who may have had a haberdashery business. I assume siblings Adner and Ariadne Merritt must have moved to CA with their mother since my grandfather b. 1887 did visit them in the '40s or '50s.
Through the Alexander connection I am trying to track down the Merritt side of the family in NYC or CA for a DNA project. I do nto know if Adner Merritt CA had a family.
On the Alexander side I noted that Merritt Chesnut Alexander and his wife Hazel Garrett had a son named Chester, Jr, who had a daughter named Anne Merritt who married Davis Ratcliff Marshall. I may be able to track Alexander Lane Merritt through the Marshall connection if I encounter more obstacles.
I would also like to discover the connection between the Alexander and Merritt families in Russell, AL since the Merritt name was used by the Alexanders prior to the marriage in 1880 of Elizabeth and Alexander Merritt. Several other Alexanders from this family also moved to Marianna and may have already been in FL since Alexander S. Merritt and Elizabeth Lane Alexander probably met there.
Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.
