There were two Alexander men of Cumberland Co KY that married two Thurman sisters according to the 1828 will of the girls father, Nathan Thurman. These couples were:
Jonathan M. Alexander Jr. md. Martha R. Thurman (at the time of the will, their only child in 1828 mentioned in Nathan Thurman's will was Martha S. Alexander).
It appears that there has been quite a lot of confusion between Jonathan M. Alexander Sr. and Jr.The following is what information I have been able to obtain to separate the two in documents:
In 1810, there is only one John M. Alexander, and this is clearly Sr. living with his very large family in Cumberland Co KY.Jr. is still living at home. But in 1820, the family is gone - no longer living in Cumberland Co KY.
The only John M. Alexander I can find in 1820 is living in Christian Co KY where a lot of Cumberland Co KY folks also lived - there was a connection between the two counties - early land grants.Any it would appear that this is where Jr. went to start his family as he is listed between 26-45 years of age and has a wife of the same age.So, this would fit with the theory below that Jr. was previously married and had several children - a number of boys actually. Not sure where John M. Alexander SR. was in 1820.
Then in 1830, Sr. was back up in Cumberland Co KY with no wife and only one son living with him.Jr. was still living in Christian Co KY with his family and wife of same age (30-40) which would give her a birth date of around 1790-1800.This is most likely not Martha R. Thurman as she was born about 1803.
By 1840, it appears that Sr. has died and Jr. moved back to Cumberland Co KY - I'm guessing Jr. was the primary heir?He is now married to Martha R. Thurman (30-40) birth date of approx.1800-1810.There are a number of children in the household.
In 1850, John and Martha are still living in Cumberland Co KY listing them both as having been born in Virginia. There are two children living at home with the initials (that are very hard to read and I may be wrong) of E. B. Alexander, female, age 10 and W.A. Alexander age 8 plus a slew of boarders.
In 1860, They are still living in Cumberland Co KY with what appears to be the same children Ellen B. Alexander, female 18, and W. F. Alexander, male 15.They still have some boarders. We know from John M. Alexander father in law's will (Nathan Thurman) that he also had a daughter named Martha S. Alexander.
By 1870, I can't find either John M. Alexander Jr. or his wife Martha.Perhaps they both died some time between 1860-1870.Just don't know.
Willis H. Alexander md. Winifred Thurman (at the time of the will, 1828, their two children mentioned were Winifred Alexander and Elizabeth Lucy Alexander.
In 1840, Willis H. Alexander is listed in the Jackson County, MIssouri census.
Would like to correspond and compare information on these two families with anyone researching them.
