My brother-in-law John Alexander is descended from John Chancy Alexander. I have been working on his line, and on the 1850 census of Highland Co., Union Twp. OH is shown John Alexander(58), wife Sarah (55), both born PA, with children Wm. W. (23), Charlotte (17), George A. (15) and Zachery T.(13), all born OH. In Liberty Twp., Highland Co., OH is the John C. Alexander family, wife Rebecca, children F. M. (m 4), J. M. (m 1). John Chancy moved on to Iowa, first in Van Buren County, and eventually to Madison County Iowa. My brother-in-law's line is John Chancy, Joseph M., John Frederick/Frederick John, and Raymond B.
On the 1860 Ohio census, Highland Co., Union Twp. is John O. Alexander, wife Sarah, sons William, George and Zacariah. I think I settled on this John as John Chancy's father as on the 1840 census there was a Jno. Alexander living in Highland County Ohio, Union Twp. Everyone seemed to fit, with the following questions. There was one male and one female 20 to 30, and one more female 5 to 10. There is an older female 50 to 60 which is too old for Sarah, but the census taker might have gotten the wrong column. If I recall correctly, the only other Alexander in Highland County in 1840 was a Wm., and I don't think the ages fit. I will have to take another look.
Rebecca Rains' parents were both from North Carolina, and I am ging to try to find more on them.
It sounds like there is a connection, and I am always happy to help.
