This is post two-years of the original post, but I thought it important for family following or the posting family has another piece of the story.I am the 2nd-Great Grandson of J. Harley Hyde (JHH) and Harriett Cobb Hyde (HCH).The facts of this post was from a personal conversation with Hattie Eller Bell Alexander Maze, daughter of B.V. Alexander and HCC in 1992 when she was about 96 yoa.Ironically, before Aunt Hattie Mae would talk to me about the family I had to convince her I was family.JHH’s real last name was Garrett; per conversation with Aunt Hattie, JHH's mother's maiden name was Hyde and purportedly his parent was killed during the Civil War and the Hyde's took the children in, so JHH took the name.I do not have the complete story, but...JHH was killed 10 December 1889 in a steam boiler explosion owned by James Thompson in Arab, Alabama. In The Guntersville Democrat, 12 December 1889, Copy #50, Vol IX, Thursday it reports Harley Hide (or Garrett) was instantly killed...The following week, 19 December 1889, Copy #51, Vol XX, Thursday, the paper reported Harley Garrett...because of his land owned.JHH is buried in the far right corner (from church) of Brashier’s Methodist Cemetery, Arab, Marshall County, Alabama.Harriett remarried Benjamin V. "Tiny" Alexander on 11 Sep 1890 at Marshall County Court House. As noted; JHH and HCH had three sons; William Walter, Isaac, whose nick name was "Brove" because Pierce, his younger brother, my 1st Great Grandfather, could not pronounce brother.Pierced was married to Viola Bodine and produced six children; of which my Grandmother was Jewell A. Hyde who married Oscar “Hoss” Bryant.Pierce purportedly drowned 29 September 1934 when he missed the ferry and tried to cross the Paint Rock River. Aunt Hattie was adamant that Pierce was murdered rather than accidental drowning “he was in his Sunday suit, so WHY would he try to swim the river”.When they discovered his body they buried him that night; at night.William Walter Hyde was the sheriff at the time.In the post I discovered that Pierce’s middle name was McCane as noted on his World War I Draft Registration; for years I believed it was McCane or McKinley.
