Jack, I show Charles' father Mendel as being born either in Italy or Germany, depending on the census.Mendel was born in March, 1830.Celia was born in February, 1852, in New York. Her parents were from Germany. They had 9 children, 8 of whom survived as of 1900, when they were living in San Francisco, where Mendel was a shoemaker.A Celia Frankheimer, born in 1833 in Germany, was living with the family. She immigrated to America in 1859, a year before Mandel Alexander.Charles' older brothers Jake (b. Mar, 1872) and Alfred (b. April, 1878), were mattress makers, while Center, b. Oct, 1879, was a carpet layer.Charles was going to school, as was Sam, b. Oct, 1888.The family lived in the 34th District of San Francisco. In 1910 Charles is living in District 44, San Francisco, lodging as a single man.He was a candy maker. He listed his father as being from Italy. In 1920 Charles and his brothers Alfred & Sam are single men living with their older sister Etta, aged 43, who is married to Frank Barney, aged 46, born in Illinois.Alfred is an upholsterer, Charles a Carpet Layer and Sam is a mechanic in a garage.Neighbors of the Alexander's include a Martin Alexander, 34 years of age, born in California.Would he be a nephew of Mendel?Mendel had died, as Celia is listed as a widow and is now 68 years of age.
In 1930 Celia (called Cecilia) is still alive, living with Charles, who is head of the household in Assemble District 26, San Francisco.Charles is still a carpet layer, single, and Etta (also called Ella) is living -with her children, May, Edna, Walter and Zack - in the home. She is divorced. Also in the home is Hallie & Ernest Sparling (niece and nephew) and Ray Sparling, aged 8, a great nephew.
In Charles' WWI Draft registration he lists his profession as carpet layer and his mother as a contact. This seems to tell us that Mendel has died by 1918.
In 1942 (WWII registration) Charles lists his address as 4681 18th Street, San Francisco. He lists as a contact Jack A. Barney, 1188 Florida Street, San Francisco. His workplace is listed as SK&L Walters, 562 Mission Street, San Francisco. His dob is confirmed as December 1, 1886.His dod is March 25, 1951, aged 64.The funeral home was Gantner - Felder - Kenny.Cause of Death was carcinoma of the bladder and heart problems.Religion listed was Protestant. He was never married.Cremated, Woodlawn Memorial Park.At the time of Charles' death, Jake, Alfred and Samuel had already died.He was survived by Center and Martin. His sister Hattie had married a Bourdette and, of course, Etta married Jack Barney.Charles was a member of King Solomon Lodge 260, F & A M.
Hope this helps.I am not a relative, as my people came from Scotland/N Ireland.
