I see all these messages flying around about Alexanders in KY, IL, IN, etc. and my little heart goes pitter-pat.That's real close to where we're searching.Let me tell you what we've found and maybe you have some ideas for us.
Charles G. (for Granderson?) ALEXANDER, b. 11 Nov 1838, we think KY.He had at least two sisters:
Mary ALEXANDER, b. abt. 1845, m. Benjamin SOWRHEAVER/Sourheaver/Sower-heaver, etc. in 1868 in Saline Co., IL.(They had a son, Benjamin Franklin SOWR-HEAVER, who married a cousin, a daughter of Charles ALEXANDER/GRANDERSON and second wife Elizabeth HEAD.)All moved to Rison, Cleveland Co., AR after 1900.
Catherine ALEXANDER, b. abt. 1845, m. a Mr. WOMACK or WORMACK and collected his (Confederate?) pension; was living in Rison, Cleveland Co., AR until her death sometime around 1930.
Charles ALEXANDER was living in IL in August 1862 when he enlisted in Co. I, 118th IL Infantry.Within four months, by December 1862 he was listed as a deserter. We can only surmise he jumped the boat and headed for KY where he probably had family. He apparently changed his name to "GRANDERSON" sometimes shown as "GRANDISON" on census records.
Under this name in 1864 he married America I. MYRICK, b. 1842, KY, dau. of James W. and Elizabeth ? MYRICK.They had at least one child, William GRANDERSON, b. 1866.America died shortly after, and Charles married, 2d, Elizabeth Frances HEAD, b. 24 Nov 1853, TN or KY.They had children:
Francis GRANDERSON, born Bet. 1870 - 1880 in Kentucky.
Robert Stinson GRANDERSON, born 01 Jan 1870 in Kentucky; died 09 Jun 1950 in Arkansas. He married Mary Rebecca CROUCH 1895 in Elizabeth Town, IL; born 10 Jun 1878 in Hillsville, KY; died 04 Sep 1956 in Rison, Cleveland, AR.
Masalla GRANDERSON, born Abt. 1875 in Kentucky.
Silas Cooper GRANDERSON, born 11 Sep 1876 in Kentucky; died 29 Apr 1942 in Star City, Arkansas. He married (1) ?; born Abt. 1880.He married (2) Jewel FRANK; born Abt. 1885; died in Star City, Arkansas.
Suellah J. GRANDERSON, born 12 Jan 1880 in Kentucky; died Mar 1917.She married Benjamin Franklin SOWRHEAVER 06 Feb 1898 in Pope Co., IL; born 27 Oct 1871 in Somerset Twp., Saline Co., Illinois; died 03 May 1927 in Hudgin Twp., Rison, Cleveland, AR.
Leona Tate GRANDERSON, born 18 Feb 1882 in Kentucky (could be Feb. 3); died 13 Nov 1933 in Pine Bluff, Jefferson, AR.She married Edgar Thomas ROOP, Sr. Abt. 1902 in Evansville, IN; born 23 Jul 1875 in Mattoon, Coles, IL; died 31 Oct 1959 in Pine Bluff, Jefferson, AR.
Luther GRANDERSON, Sr., born 17 Jul 1895 in Kentucky; died 22 Mar 1973 in Pine Bluff, Jefferson, AR.He married (1) Minnie Bell WOOLEY 17 Feb 1921 in Rison, Cleveland, AR; born 21 Jan 1902 in Miller Twp., Cleveland, AR; died 03 Apr 1927 in Rison, Cleveland, AR.He married (2) Hazel RYBURN Aft. 1927 in Pine Bluff, Jefferson, AR; born 19 Sep 1910 in Cleveland Co., AR; died 30 Jan 1998 in Pine Bluff, Jefferson, AR.He married (3) Pearl MANGUM Abt. 1940; born Abt. 1915.He married (4) Bessie GLOVER Abt. 1960 in Pine Bluff, Jefferson, AR; born 12 Nov 1894; died 29 Jul 1989 in Pine Bluff, Jefferson, AR.
Charles ALEXANDER/GRANDERSON was reputed to be a traveling minister who walked or rode a mule around the South to do his preaching. In fact, his name appears as "Rev." on the tombstone. He d. 22 Jul 1912 in Rison, Cleveland, AR and is buried at the Greenwood Cemetery.Elizabeth Frances HEAD lived 'til 10 Apr 1936 in Star City, Lincoln, AR, and is also buried at the Greenwood Cemetery.
Any clues?Do any of your KY families have a Charles, a Mary and a Catherine born about that time frame? There is another family story that he was a descendant of Rev. War Surgeon James Rankin ALEXANDER and, indeed, James apparently had a son named Charles Granderson ALEXANDER, but he was born much before our Charles.Could he be a grandson or gr-grandson of James?
Thanks for your help.:o)
