The same book states on p. 138 that these Alexanders from whom Rev. James Alexander b. 1634 came "has borne a coat of arms which was different from the Lord Sterling [sic] arms."I have copies of both, the non-Stirling group having the same shield but a mermaid to the left and an elephant to the right, with the motto "Per mare, per terras" below. My family has the latter coat of arms, but have not definitely linked our progenitor, Aaron Alexander who m. (2nd) Jean Brown, widow of Isaac Ross, in 1763 near Charlotte, N.C., to the John Alexander who was half-brother to the Rev. James Alexander b. 1634, and who settled in Carolina, although the circumstantial evidence is fairly good.
