I've read "James Alexander came to NY from Scotland after serving with some distinction under the 'Old Pretender' in 1715." In NY he established law practice, married widow of prosperous merchant, and had at least one son William (who was known to American contemps as "Lord Stirling" although Britian never officially gave him that title.) Did James have other children? Who was James' father and mother? My source mentioned a daughter "Kitty" but that's obviously a nickname. It doesn't mention other children or the name of the woman he married. It does say that he moved to Basking Ridge NJ sometime after 1762. James is best known for being writer/editor of some of the works published by John Peter Zenger, whom he tried to defend in 1730s, but was disbarred for a year! Genealogy is a whole new experience for me, trying to pick up and fill in gaps in my fathers' research of 20 years ago. Help, please.
