SARAH MATILDA KINDLE was born in Burlington County, N.J., March 29, l829. She moved with her parents to Montgomery County, Ohio, in l833. She was united in marriage December l7th, l848, to DAVID MACY, who gave his life in the service of his country, July 22nd, l863.Three children were born to this union: WILLIAM K. MACY, of Garden Grove, Iowa; JOSEPH E. MACY, of Leon, Iowa; and MRS. E. O. ALEXANDER, also of Leon.
They moved to Decatur County in l853, and located in High Point Township where they took up government land and lived through all the hardships and privations of pioneer life. After her husband's death, she remained on the homestead and reared her family.She was married to ALBERT G. BUFFUM, June 4th, l874. They lived at Leroy, Iowa until l892, when MR. BUFFUM died. She then moved to Garden Grove and lived there until October, l920, when she came to Leon to spend her declining years with her daughter, MRS. E.O. ALEXANDER. Here she departed this life May 4th, l92l, aged 92 years, l month and 5 days. She was baptized in the Methodist Episcopal Church in l868, at Garden Grove, and transferred her membership to Leon when she moved there.
She was a sincere and earnest Christian woman of a bright and happy disposition, loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She took great pleasure in her church activities and kept abreast of the present historical and social events. She read much and worked continuously until the last. She studied her Bible thoroughly and many religious papers found a place on her reading table.Her children were at her bed side when she passed away. Her life will be an inspiration to them, her death a glorious ending of a well spent life.
She leaves to mourn her, one sister, ELIZABETH ELLIOTT, of Portland, Oregon; three children, seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, many relatives and a host of friends. The funeral services were held Friday, May 6th, at l0 o'clock a.m. in the Garden Grove M.E. Church, conducted by Rev. Guy J. Winslow. The body was laid to rest in the Garden Grove Cemetery.
