We are thus far inclined to accept the Allen Co., KY, Silas ALEXANDER as the son of James Rankin and Dorcas (GARRISON) ALEXANDER based on several things:
1.The fact that he consistently, throughout his whole life, traveled with and lived among other known members of the James Rankin and Dorcas (GARRISON) ALEXANDER family, in NC and KY.
2.The fact that he carried on known family given names (Silas, Mark, Charles Grandison, etc.).
3.Family stories told by my mother-in-law's uncle, William ROOP, of when he was a child in KY.In about 1910, Catherine (ALEXANDER) WOMACK, then a widow, lived with the family. She told stories about her childhood in Kentucky and how her grandfather, James Rankin ALEXANDER was a "surgeon in the Revolutionary War."Census records in 1870 and 1880 show M. Catherine ALEXANDER, b. 1846 in Kentucky, living in Saline Co., IL, with the family of her sister Mary M. (ALEXANDER) SOWERHEAVER.
2.According to the 118th IL Union Army muster roll for my husband's 2d-great-grandfather Charles Grandison ALEXANDER, he was born in Scottsville, Allen Co., KY in 1838 (fits with 1850 Scottsville, Allen Co., Census, and 1860 Simpson Co., KY, Census above).
3.According to the 1860, 1870, and 1880 Census records for Saline Co., IL, Mary M. (ALEXANDER) SOWERHEAVER (sister of Charles Grandison ALEXANDER), was born in 1834 in Kentucky, father and mother born in NC (fits with 1850 Scottsville, Allen Co., Census and 1860 Simpson Co., KY, Census, above).
Unless we hear proof that there is a Bible or other birth record stating positively that the Cannon Co., TN, Silas ALEXANDER is the son of James Rankin and Dorcas (GARRISON) ALEXANDER, we will continue our research with a view towards proving conclusively that it is indeed the Allen Co., KY, Silas ALEXANDER instead.
