My Charles Grandison Alexander was the son of Charles and
Margaret Alexander of Mecklenburg Co., NC.Charles married
Margaret Alexander, the dau. of James and Rachel Alexander.
His pension no., no doubt about it, was S-21599, and he was
born Jan 4, 1755, according to his father's Bible entry.
Charles Alexander pension S-21599 lived until he was 1t least 79 yrs of age per Leonidas Polk who visited with him
on a couple of occasions while he was in TN.James Knox
Polk, future Pres., made Charles' pension application for
him while in TN.My Charles lived on Swan Creek per Leonidas Polk, his kinsman.
The other Charles Alexander S-6488 was born in Aug 18, 1762 and lived to 6 Sep. 1834.He was aged 72 yrs.My Charles on 8 Sep 1834 told Leonidas Polk that if he lived until Jan 4 next year, he would be 80.I have his death
date listed accordingly, i.e., aft. 8 Sep 1834.
I believe that Charles Alexander, Sr., was the brother of
Col. Adam Alexander, and in fact, was the signer of MDI.
My Charles would have been but 20 or so in 1775.However,
my Charles' uncle, Gen. Thomas Polk, did sign MDI, and it
is not out of the question that my Charles signed, but I
think not at 20 yrs of age.Charles, Sr., was said to have
been the 'black sheep' of his family due to his position on
organized religion.I read somewhere that he fought well
in the Rev. War.It was noted also that my kinsman, Col.
Ezekiel Polk, had a similar dislike for organized religion
and said so very clearly on his tombstone.
In Alexander Kin Vol II, there is much about these Charles
Alexanders and often what is written is MIXED information.
That is, some data for one is mixed with some data for the
other one.The authors suggested no one would ever know,
perhaps, which Charles was which. Not so.It is very clear in the book which one is the son of Benjamin and
Susannah (Polk) Alexander; he is the same one whom Leonidas
Polk called "Ole Charlie" and visited with and said he
lived a short distance from where they then visited in
Maury Co., TN, on SWAN CRK.The one who lived to be 79
and probably 80.NOT the one who died at age 72.
Therefore, Charles Sr. and Jr. are other Charles Alexanders.
Charles Grandison Alexander, who was my Charles S-21,599
and Margaret (Alexander) Alexander's son, married Martha
Margaret Alexander, wife of my Charles, was d/o James and
Rachel Alexander (in womb of Rachel when James died). Now,
James had brother Stephen, both sons of Daniel and Prudence
(Johnston) Alexander, who married Martha Wilson, either the
sister or dau. of Zaccheus Wilson, Signer of MDI, some say.
They had a son, Dr. Joseph, who m. Margaret Hope. They in
turn had a dau., Martha Wilson Alexander, who married Chas.
Grandison Alexander. They were said to be 3rd cousins.
All of this is in the books Alexander Kin.
My Charles Grandison and Martha Wilson (Alexander) Alexander migrated to Jackson, Madison Co., TN, where both
are buried (as well as at least one son, Edwin Franklin A., b.1836).Chas. G. built a large 2 story home on the edge of what is now Union College, which was still standing when the first vol of Alexander Kin was written (copyright 1965, reprinted, 1979.)[I think Albert Gore's
family lived in Jackson, TN.I wrote asking him about the
old home on the Union Campus, but never heard back.]
If you do not have the books, Alexander Kin, and cannot find them in your library, I will scan some pages to you,
if you wish.
I might point out now that Margaret Alexander, d/o James
and Rachel, was probably very young when she married Chas.
Alexander, per the dates given. But, I have no doubts.
Some of the children of Margaret and Charles are also listed in James and Rachel's Bible. To wit:Grandison,
Patsey, and I.C. (who may have died young, I have nothing
on him). When Chas Grandison and Martha Wilson Alexanders
married, he listed his name as "Grandison", which is very
reasonable, since his dad was Charles and by calling dad
Charles and son Grandison, confusion was avoided.Margaret
was listed as born 1780, and Charles as born 1755.25 yrs
difference. The date looks good for Margaret as Rachel, her sister was born 1778.And, Charles was born just 2 yrs
after his bro., Thomas (b. 1753)...but next child, Taylor,
was born 1770, quite a spread of years (15).But, the family Bible said Charels b. 1755, as well as Charles himself.
Hope I have straightened out some things for you.
BTW, I think that Charles Alexander, Sr., bro. of Adam, is
the Charles listed on pg. 346, who m. Jean, and had 7 ch.
If you look at that page, you will see the continuing confusion regarding these Charles Alexanders.
Also, I am kin to Col. Adam Alexander and that line through
one of the 7 brothers who came from Raphoe, County Donegal,
Ireland, and also through Adam and Mary (Shelby) Alexander's granddau., Margaret Means Alexander, who m.
my 3Ggreatuncle, Col. Moses Winslow Alexander (not the Dr).
Also, through my 4Ggreatgrandparents Evan and Susannah
Polk (Alexander) Shelby; he, son of Moses and Isabella
(Alexander) Shelby, and she, dau. of Benjamin and Susannah
(Polk) Alexander.Mary Shelby was Evan's greataunt (or aunt).Susannah Polk Alexander was my 4Ggreat aunt.Susannah SHELBY, d/o Evan and Susannah, was my 3G greatgrandmother, who married Benjamin and Susannah (Polk) Alexander's grandson, Daniel Alexander. Therefore, all the siblings of Susannah SHELBY were my Shelby aunts and uncles, and also my Alexander 1st cousins.Mac.
