Alexander Kin and elsewhere says that the 7 (bros) + 2 (sisters) came from Raphoe, County Donegal, Ulster, Ireland.Their mother, who is bd. in Cecil Co., MD, was Mary Maxwell. At first, it was thought that Rev. James Andrew Alexand, a Laggan Preby. Minister in Ulster, was the father; later, some think he was James' uncle, William. These were Scots. I have assumed that the English offered blocs of land in Ireland to Scots if they would come and stay on it.I also believe that the hatred between Scots-Irish and Irish today is due to this move by the British, to dilute the influence of the Catholics.
Benjamin Alexander was born in Cecil Co., MD; Susannah Polk
was born in Cumberland Co., PA, near today's Carlisle, PA.
Their first 2 children were born in Bucks Co., PA, and they
migrated to Mecklenburg Co., NC, by 1755, from Germantown,
W. of Philadelphia, PA.Some of our Polks and Shelbys
came down the Little Cove, Franklin Co., PA, to, eventually, Mecklenburg Co., NC, and the area.
I also know that Col. Moses Alexander, a Tory, was ambushed
at Rocky River Settlement in Mecklenburg/Cabarras Co., NC,
enroute to Alamance with black powder and other goods to
meet up with a British force. My greatgrandfather, Wm.
"Black Billy" Alexander, led a small group of boys (he
was only 18) from Rocky River Presby. Ch. Congregation, and
perhaps one or two from his church, Sugar Creek, and at
first light, with bodies smudged with soot?, held up Col
Moses and his light guard and unloaded all the gear in a
pile. One of the White brothers shot his gun into the black powder and blew it all up.They were known afterward
as the "black boys of Cabarrus Co."[other frontiersmen
from the area of NC drove the wagons, thus, the wagons were
first unloaded, THEN the pile of powder, canteens, etc. was
blown up.Reportedly, one of the wagon drivers recognized
his brother and chanced a whisper to him:'you are gonna
regret this.'Supposedly, his brother told him to shut up.
Strange tale.Col. Moses Alexander and Wm. BB Alexander's
father, Benjamin, had grandfather's who were brothers.
Even more strange:Gen. Thomas Polk, uncle of Wm. BB
Alexander thru his mother, Susannah Polk, had a dau., Jenny, who married Col. Moses Alexander's son, Nathaniel!!
Nathaniel became gov. of NC.Thomas and Susannah Polk's
parents were Wm. and Margaret (Taylor) Polk, who were the
g-grands of Pres. J.K.Polk thru son, Ezekiel, and grandson
Samuel whose wife was Jane Knox.
Col. Moses' wife was Sarah Taylor Alexander; her mother was
Jane Taylor.Often wondered if there was a Taylor connection between Jane (Taylor) Alexander and Margaret (Taylor) Polk.Nothing at all was ever done to Wm. BB and
the 'black boys of Cabarrus Co.,' NC, for the raid. But,
they did flee to GA/AL for a short time, but then returned.
